The fourth principle from the NYSED Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education framework states the following:
“Ongoing professional learning is rooted in the idea that teaching and learning is an adaptive process needing constant reexamination (Moll et al., 1992; Gay, 2010). It allows learners to develop and sharpen a critically conscious lens toward instruction, curriculum, assessment, history, culture, and institutions. Learners must be self-directed and take on opportunities that directly impact learning outcomes.”
Now recall from the Immersive Scenario:
Professional learning is important, no matter what your career is. As educators, we are in charge of taking care of students’ minds, so being a learning teacher is essential. Keeping abreast of current educational trends and research, new resources and tools, and more is a critical part of furthering your own knowledge. Although this is the final module for engaging with Culturally Responsive Teaching, it should not be the final time that you further your learning on the topic. This module will provide you with some final nuggets of information about equity and cultural responsiveness, and highlight some ways you can continue to extend your professional learning network (PLN). How will you continue to be a learning teacher?
You explored and designed around three main objectives in this module. Now, take some time to reflect on your learning and visualize an action plan for your remote and hybrid learning environment. Be sure to add these reflections to your Efficacy Notebook!
Holding Ourselves Accountable
- How would you illustrate equity and equality now, based on your new learning? Why?
- How do biases and stereotypes impact student achievement? Why is it important to continue learning about these topics?
- How do you plan to hold yourself accountable to engage in new learning around equity and culturally responsive-sustaining education?
Continuously Educating Ourselves
- How will you immerse yourself in diverse community experiences? Why is it important that you have an understanding of what is occurring in students’ communities?
- Why is it important that students’ families are truly engaged in the school community? How can you leverage the strength of students’ home environments?
- What will be your next steps in educating yourself more about being culturally responsive and sustaining? What will you read? What will you watch? With whom will you engage?
Intentionally Growing Our PLN
- Take a few moments to take stock of your current PLN. How much do you want it to grow in the coming year? By the next year?
- How can you leverage social media for educational use? Who do you follow? What articles, books, webinars, etc., are you now going to invest time to learn?
